I tried to upgrade my WordPress to 2.9.2 but I had to upgrade my database MySql first since WordPress 2.9.2 requires higher MySQL version. Just like I usually did with the database backup routine, I used “mysqldump” command to export data from MySQL 4.0 and then used “mysql” to import data into MySql 5.0. Everything seemed OK at the first, but I later on found out all my Chinese characters turned into non-readable mess characters.
The problem was my host provider, 1 and 1 located in Europe, uses “latin1-german1_ci” as default database collation. And the dumped SQL script from the MySql 4.0 does not have the database collation information even it is in UTF-8, so all new tables created in the new MySql 5.0 have the latin1_german1_ci as the default collation and latin as the default character set.

According to Ubuntu official release note, Ubuntu 9.10 has changed the input method from SCIM to iBUS.
New input method framework
Ubuntu has switched to IBus as preferred input method framework. Unlike the previously used SCIM, IBus is under active development and fixes a number of SCIM’s design limitations.
The language selector tool now gives the user the possibility to select the preferred input method framework.
That was why I got the error message “no configuration file “scim-bridge” exists.” below when I tried to switch on SCIM package based on the old instruction.

Finally I got the Chinese Characters display well on my BlackBerry Curve 8330 handheld from Verizon Wireless provider. Since Verizon from USA is a very special wireless service carrier who is using CDMA network technology, it is very slow for us to get some advanced features from Verizon compared with other GSM BlackBerry carriers.
Anyhow, recently I found out Verizon has its latest 4.5 OS software for the BlackBerry Curve 8330. And this new OS support Chinese and other East Asian types of font which the big reason for me to upgrade.
