Well, first of all, I am not a Linux geek. But I like Ubuntu when I first touched it.
I heard from the website http://education.zdnet.com/?p=1250 that Ubuntu will release its newer version (called Gutsy Gibbon) in this month. According to Ubuntu’s own description, they will release a new version each half year and the latest one is 7.04 which was released on April, 2007. By the way, I think you already figured out how the Ubuntu version name convention works. Yes, that is right, the major version number comes from the Year (like 7 for 2007) and the minor version number is for the release month number.
What’s new with the new version: Well, here is the list from Ubuntu official website.
- GNOME 2.20
- Desktop 3D effects
- Firefox plugins in Ubuntu
- Dynamic screen configuration
- Fully automatic printer installation
- Handling of non-free device drivers
- NTFS writing
The new features I like most is the printer driver which means you can print PDF from every applications besides the OpenOffice. And other device driver updating can help the plug-n-play with multiple monitors. All these changes can make more user friendly which is the big concern for regular users are considering switch Windows to Linux like OS.
Can not wait to see the final release then I play around with it. Now let us count down together.
