If you like a very interest video clip from the YouTube and want to share with your co-workers in your next presentation, you should be able to play it in a PowerPoint presentation using a specific ActiveX control and the Macromedia Flash Player. Since videos on YouTube are almost flash-like files, you can add an ActiveX control to the PowerPoint slide and create a link from it to the video clip.
Please make sure you can play flash file on your computer before you proceed.
- The ActiveX control, called Shockwave Flash Object, must be “registered” on your computer for you to play the YouTube video clip within PowerPoint. If it is not registered, download the latest version of the Macromedia Flash Player from the Macromedia Web site; this will register the control on your computer.
- Older versions of the Shockwave Flash Object may be registered on your computer. To guarantee that complex animations run properly, we recommend that you install the latest version of the Macromedia Flash Player.
To play a YouTube video clip in your presentation, follow these steps:
Step 1: Inert the ActiveX object into your powerpoint slide
- Install the Macromedia Flash Player on your computer if you have not done so.
- In normal view in PowerPoint, display the slide on which you want to play the video clip.
- On the View menu, point to Toolbars, and then click Control Toolbox.
- In the Control Toolbox, click More Controls (the button with the hammer and wrench icon).
- In the list, scroll down and click Shockwave Flash Object, then drag on the slide to draw the control, or just double click and the system will add the object in your slide automatically. You can resize the control at any point by dragging the sizing handles if you need to adjust it to the size of the animation. (click the thumbnail picture to see what the Control Toolbox looks like)
Step 2: Create the link to your YouTube video clip
- Go to YouTube website www.youtube.com, search and play your favorite video clip.
- Get the URL to this video clip, which is located inside the URL text input field on the right side of your video. You can highlight it, and then copy and paste to your notepad. Like this one, www.youtube.com. So your new URL should look like http://www.youtube.com/v/da6Hi0phCYY
- Now you can copy this new URL into your clipboard. (Optional) To verify you got the correct link, you can look up the text field labeled “Embed” on the right side of your YouTube video, and the new link above should be the same as the value of the first param.
Step 3: Link the video clip in your Powerpoint file
- Right-click the Shockwave Flash Object we created on item #5 of Step 1, and then click Properties.
- On the Alphabetic tab, click the Movie property.
- In the value column (the blank cell next to Movie), paste or type the full Uniform Resource Locator (URL) to your YouTube video clip that we created in Step 2. http://www.youtube.com/v/da6Hi0phCYY)
Finally, Step 4: fine tune YouTube video in your Powerpoint file
- To set specific options for how the video plays, do the following, and when you’re done, close the Properties dialog box:

- Since the video file from YouTube has a Start/Pause control built into it, the Playing setting can be set to False. But just in case, you are recommended to make sure the Playing property is set to True. If you don’t want the video to play repeatedly, in the Loop property, select False (click the cell to get a down arrow, click the arrow, and select False). But again, you might need to click the embed Play control from YouTube video to play again.
- For YouTube video, you might not have the option to embed the video so you can pass this presentation on to others. But you can try, in the EmbedMovie property, click True. (Of course, in order for the YouTube video to run, the Shockwave Flash Object control still need be registered on any computer that runs this presentation.)
- To run the YouTube Video: With the slide displayed in normal view, click the Slide Show button in the lower left of the PowerPoint window (or press F5, or, on the Slide Show menu, click View Show).
- To exit the slide show and return to normal view, press ESC.

Thanks this site helped me alot but I have a problem. The youtube video works in Powerpoint 2003 but after I close powerpoint and later reopen it, the video doesn’t work and where it should be, there is a white box. To fix this I have to go and redo the steps. Please help me. I want to be able to open powerpoint and it works.

This was very helpful and i sucessfully got my youtube video in my power point.
Problem:
When i play in pp viewer or i send it to someone else to open in their pp the video is there but wil lnot play. you can not click play either it just takes you to the next slide.
i want it to play automatically when the slide starts.
i followed directions to a T!
in properties I clicked True to embed movie but it stil did not work.
